The Shenandoah River meets the Potomac River in this small West Virginia town, the site of John Brown's assault on the US arsenal of 1859, an event that accelerated the onset of the Civil War. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park features museums, history exhibitions and shows, plus approximately 20 miles of hiking trails. You can explore the rocks where rivers meet and walk to St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and the old cemetery on the hill behind it. Also in Harpers Ferry is the Appalachian Trail Tourist Center, from where you can walk on the Appalachian Trail for a view of the town and river. Local outfitters offer tube excursions on the river.Seen more at: A little piece of heaven on earth and god called it West virginia poster
